**Given**

Sum of two numbers = 1000

40 % of one number is equal to 60 % of the other

**Calculation**

Let first number be x

⇒ Second number = (1000 - x)

⇒ 40% of x = (40/100) × x

⇒ 40% of x = (2x/5) ....(1)

Now,

⇒ 60% of (1000 - x) = (3/5) × (1000 - x)

⇒ 60% of (1000 - x) = 600 - (3x/5) ....(2)

Now from question equation (1) equal to equation (2)

⇒ (2x/5) = 600 - (3x/5)

⇒ (2x/5) + (3x/5) = 600

⇒ (5x/5) = 600

⇒ x = 600

⇒ Second number = 1000 - 600 = 400

**∴ Numbers are 600 and 400**

** **

Let the numbers be a and b

40% of a = 60% of b

⇒ a/b = 3/2

5x = 1000

⇒ x = 200

a = 3 × 200 = 600

b = 2 × 200 = 400

**∴ Numbers are 600 and 400**
